Mermaid

Drew this one out on the computer in black and white. Put the colour in on my iPad Mini. Very cute. Prints can be ordered here.

Here we have a young Wicked Witch of the West, bored at school. Inspired by the book, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.
This image here was originally a sketch submitted to the Twitter account @Sketch_Dallies. I have since fleshed out the sketch. Enjoy.

Here’s three images first drawn in pen and ink and then scanned into the computer, and then colour roughed out quickly in Procreate on my iPad. Enjoy.

While this isn’t my first image created almost entirely on the iPad this is my favorite so far.
I wanted to do a series of images for the Image of the month section of my blog for the summer. For a theme, I settled on TV Femme Fatales of the Sixties. The first one in this series is Emma Peel aka Dame Diana Rigg of British TV’s The Avengers. I’m a bit too young to have caught the show during its original run, but I’ve aught the sbow on reruns a few times. And like many a goung man, I was captivated by her strenght and sex appeal.
It’s interesting that in this retro style of drawing, she would up looking quite a bit like Natalie Dormer, which makes sense as she plays the daughter to Diana Rigg’s character in Game of Thrones, so I left it as is.
Starting off as a sketch, I used the iPad’s camera to take a shot of the sketch. This was my scanner replacement. I then opened the image as a background layer in Autodesk’s Sketchbook Ink and used the tools in that program to ink out the black lines. I then exported the image to my photos library at a fairly high resolution.
I then imported the image into Procreate App to quickly throw in some greyscale inl washes and add some extra detail to the image.
The background pattern was a fill pattern from the Sketches program imported as a layer in Procreate.
All in all l the image turned out rather well. And it shows that fairly polished images can be created solely on the iPad.
After originally posting this image to Twitter, someone posted this image as a reply:

It’s the right era, but I have no idea where the image is from. It inspired me to make this drawing:

Enjoy.

Some retro style faces. Drawn in Illustrator, then some extra colour and texture work done in Photoshop.
One femme fatale, one girl next door, and a heavy-brow caveman. Enjoy!
For years and years, I had heard of a website called Threadless. They are a crowd-sourced site for t-shirt designs (among other things). There’s pretty descent cash prizes for the winners and they do seem to have quite a variety of very different styles of designs that get to be printed. After viewing many other designer’s submissions, I decided to sign up.
And then I promptly did nothing about it.
Not too long ago, I decided to give it another try. This time do more than just think about joining in and actually do something about it. I noticed they had a sub contest where they wanted character submissions and these character submissions (if won for t-shirt design) would get created as a vinyl toy! With my burgeon experience in 3D printing, I thought I’d have the advantage of knowing what might translate well into a proper three dimensional design. So here’s my design:
I know a lot of aspiring designers and artists follow my blog, so if you are of a mind, and think my design is worth it, follow the link, and give me a vote! Act soon as voting will end in a few days. You’ll need to either set up an account with Threadless or sign in using Facebook to vote though.
And even if you don’t think much of my design, go to the site anyways and check it out. There’s a lot of clever imagery there that might just inspire you to make a design of your own! Or perhaps pick up a tee or two for yourself!
Enjoy.

Whew! May was a petty busy month. This image was orginally going to be submitted to the @Sketch_Dailies twitter feed, but I decided against it last minute. It just wasn’t working for me. I let it sit for a while and then re-tackled it. It really didn’t take much re-work at all. Sometimes you just need some time to distance yourself from your work in order to see it for what it really is.
This is a mix of traditional pen and ink drawing with some colour added in both Photoshop and SketchBookPro.
Enjoy.

Whew! It’s been a busy, busy month. Just managed to get one finished for this month.
This one is a cleaned up and coloured image that I drew for one of the @sketch_Dailies drawing challenge. I’ve blogged about them before. The Lady of the Lake from the legend of King Arthur. Most people conjure up images of beautiful, young fair maidens. I decided on a more older, reflective woman. She is supposed to be a Lady of the Lake, not Girl of the Lake.
Drawing in pencil and then inked in markers. The image was scanned in and colour laid out in Photoshop. The bubbles and extra ink spatters were added in Photoshop as well.
Enjoy.

Just in time for the end of the month! It has been quite a hectic month for me, both professionally and personally. Luckily, I had this up my sleeve.
It’s a drawing of my son, Aiden, who turned 1 this month. I drew this out in a Adobe Ideas on my iPhone with just a few finishing touches on my desktop using Adobe Illustrator. I feel this is my best drawing yet using Adobe Ideas. It’s quite a different experience drawing on such a small device. Maybe one day I will be able to justify a tablet and see how much different/better the experience is.
Enjoy.
In a previous post from a while ago, I mentioned that I had been taking a life drawing class at the Winnipeg Art Gallery for quite some time. I also posted some samples.
A few years have past. I’m still attending a life drawing studio (though not as often as before) and this time it is at the Cre8ery Gallery in the Exchange District of Winnipeg. It’s basically the exact same set up as the Winnipeg Art Gallery except they start off with much shorter gesture drawings at the beginning and they have long 3 hour poses on Thursdays (that I have yet to attend).
The drawings I have here are a mix of the two different studios with the balance being from the Winnipeg Art Gallery. These range from 1 minute gesture drawings to 30 minute poses.
For those interested, these are mostly conté crayon or charcoal pencil drawings on newsprint.
Enjoy.
